All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. -- 2 Timothy 3:16

In a remote area of Kenya on the southern shores of Lake Victoria, accessible primarily by boat, is the tiny settlement of Nyagwethe. Partially developed by an Italian philanthropist, it boasts a modest “community center” that houses, among other things, a café and offices for Wycliffe staff translating the Bible into the local Suba language.

In one of its rooms, two days out of every other week, twenty-two students gather to study Christianity. These are not new converts but rather established pastors representing a variety of denominations ranging from Pentecostal to Roman Catholic. They come from the surrounding villages, and, in some cases, walk up to two hours to arrive in time for class. They are eager to learn more about God, His revelation, His church, and how to better serve His people.

Pastor Joshua Nyicula Onyango founded Suba Lake Victoria Bible School for the purpose of training up local leaders who often are so limited in biblical understanding that they supplement it with indigenous beliefs and customs. Some have even admitted to using witch doctors in an effort to increase church membership!

The school’s governing board has developed an ambitious three-year diploma program that includes Biblical Studies and Languages, Practical and Systematic Theology, Discipleship Training, Christian Education, and General Studies such as business administration and environmental stewardship. The hope is to someday receive accreditation, but for now, this goal seems far off, given their sparse resources.

A student considers her or himself fortunate to own a copy of the Bible, no matter what condition it is in, and the school’s library is woefully inadequate. These challenges, however, do not seem to daunt the students or instructors. They have been given a vision…and each other.

[Out of the 2003 budget surplus, Bethany is partnering with Pastor Joshua and Suba Lake Victoria Bible School through the donation of Bibles and other study materials.]

Jesus, our great Teacher, we confess that too often we have taken it for granted that we have many Bibles on our shelves while others yearn to have just one copy of their own. We’re grateful that Bethany has been able to contribute to the SLV Bible School library resources, and we pray for your continued provision for them as they train new leaders for your service. Increase our thirst to share your Good News in whatever ways we can. Amen.
