Bethany Briefs
May 2007

Dan BaumgartnerReading the Book / Dan Baumgartner
It was 1992. I was thirty-three years old and fully immersed in life: family, church, neighborhood and business career. But things began stirring in Anne and me, and we were exploring - just wondering, really - whether God might be calling us into pastoral ministry...

Fellowship On The Road / Elizabeth Edwards
Reflective silence weaved around the eleven people gathered in the cozy living room of a Whidbey Island cottage. Before each of us lay a printout of the last seven verses of Mark 10 - the story of blind Bartimaeus...

Bethany Calls Todd Holdridge as Associate Pastor
On April 29, the Bethany congregation met to vote on the recommendation of Todd Holdridge for the position of associate holdridgespastor. The motion was passed, and Todd accepted the call. Todd is a graduate of Fuller Seminary and served as youth director at Shadle Park Presbyterian Church and as Associate Pastor of Youth and Family Ministries at Trabuco Presbyterian church. He and his wife Monica have two children, Jonathan (5) and Chad (3). They will move to Seattle this June to begin ministry at Bethany.

Jane Gunningham Travels to Chad / Jane Gunningham
When I hear the Bethany choir or attend third service, or when the art group displays a project, it reminds me of Jane Gunningham. A vital part of our church, Jane now works with World Concern in the Sahel region of West Africa.

Jesus in the Garden & Centering Prayer / Joe Guppy
It's Good Friday. Earlier this evening, I facilitated a Centering Prayer Workshop in the sanctuary...

Hidden Spaces at Bethany / Meagan Davenport
I've visited a few churches in my lifetime, including Westminster Abbey, Westgate Chapel, Turning Point Community Church, and Portugal's Monasterio de Betalha...

Narnia!/ Cate McCrory, Production Assistant
Fri & Sat, May 11-12, 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall
You can't imagine how beautiful Narnia was, but you can come and see it for yourself on May 11th and 12th! Come watch 25 of Narniathe children and youth of Bethany tell you the enchanting tale of Narnia in a musical! Take a step through the wardrobe and find yourself in a fairy tale that is both delightful and meaningful for all ages. Watch as Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy travel through Narnia, meet a powerful Lion, fight a war, defeat a witch, and become the kings and queens of a magical land.

Admission is free. We will be collecting a free will offering for summer family missions. Be there to catch a glimpse through the Wardrobe and be captivated by the story of Narnia!

Caring for Creation / Creation Stewardship Group
Every day is earth day for good stewards. Throughout the Bible we are called to be good stewards of all god has created and entrusted to our care. How do we strive to be good stewards of creation at Bethany?...

Art Installation / Abbie Berry
This was the second largest installation on the church lawn, and it took a minute to think of something on the scale of the door project we organized a couple of years ago...

Trace Bundy Concert / Scott Gronholz
On March 30, the Bethany Youth Group hosted Trace Bundy in concert to raise money for their summer mission trip to Pasadena and we had a blast! The evening consisted of student testimonies, desserts and coffee, and an extremely entertaining concert from Trace Bundy who is often referred to as the "Acoustic Ninja." We had a great turnout of Bethany folks and people from the community. We also raised enough money to pray for each student's plane ticket to Pasadena this summer.

While in Pasadena the BYPG plans on partnering with the Harambee Center, which John Perkins founded in 1982. In addition, we will be partnering with 3 other homeless ministries in the area in order to gain insight on how Christian ministries are serving the homeless population in Pasadena. It promises to be an amazing experience. Please pray that God will be preparing each student for what He has in store for them.

Children & Family Ministries

Families in Service - Summer 2007
This summer families will have many amazing opportunities to Yakamashare the love of Christ with neighbors, WND guests, seniors, new friends in the Rainier Valley, in China, and with native Americans on the Yakama reservation, to name just a few!
All families will receive a brochure in early May titled “Families in Service 2007- Sharing and Caring for God’s World”. Please read it carefully and pray about which opportunities your family would like to be involved with.

Then on Sunday, June 3, the Fellowship Hall will be filled:

  • with tables for each activity (so you can sign up and/or learn more)
  • outreach activities for the whole church to come see and experience (and there will even be some international snacks!).

God is doing amazing work…please keep this summer of outreach ministry in prayer! Questions? Contact Julia Sensenbrenner at jss361@comcast.net.

Summer Sunday School...Isn’t Far Away!
Parents of children in nursery through 5th grade are reminded that all parents (moms and dads!) take one turn during the summer in their child’s nursery room or class, giving our school year volunteers a much deserved break.

If you have a specific Sunday that you’d like to be scheduled (or several from which we can choose one) please let Dianne Ross know by June 5... otherwise we’ll assign you a week, and you’ll be responsible to switch with someone if it doesn’t fit your schedule.

kidsOur summer schedule is in effect from June 24 through September 2. Also, we normally assign parents to be in their child’s classroom. If you would prefer working with a different age or with one of our children with special needs, please let Dianne know.

Parents of older elementary children are also encouraged to consider working with their older child in the toddler room, or one of our pre-school rooms. This is a great way for older elementary children to use their gifts in Christ’s kingdom!
