October 2007

Pastor DanLet Us Pray / Pastor Dan Baumgartner
Ten years ago I was in Minneapolis, and I didn’t really have much time to make a nursing home call. But Howie was asking if I’d go with him and I hated to turn Howie down. Howie was about 80 years old, a burley former Minnesota Gopher lineman with a raspy voice and a gentle heart. He’d given his career to serve kids as a public school principal and now as a senior citizen he was continuing to give his life away to other people. Howie taught me a lot about ministry...

The Discipline of Study / Patti Holman
In the centuries before harnessing fossil-fuel combustion into engine power, 20-horse-power meant twenty horses, and the opportunity to study, along with literacy itself, belonged to the privileged. Six days a week men, women, and children powered their lives with sweat and calories, and study (especially the study of scripture), blessing the Sabbath with rest...

Confessions of a Convicted Worshipper / Tara Taylor
TaraAsk me anything about worship...I’m kind of an expert. After all, I’ve spent twenty-plus years playing guitar, singing and leading others into God’s presence. My identity as a worshipper is strong and unshakable, and I never miss an opportunity to share my gifts – at church, retreats, conferences. I spend a lot of time doing worship...

Dolphus Weary Reflection / Greta Bergquist
I recently spent three years teaching at Patterson High School in Baltimore, Maryland. In three years of working with over 400 students, only four were white. Most of my kids were African-American, Latino, and newly arrived refugees or immigrants from all over the world...

Caring for Creation / Creation Stewardship Team
creation“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.” -Ps 24:1,2
Meditate on these verses and then think of this week’s headlines—polluted ecosystems, toxins in our food, unusual floods and droughts, species extinctions, deforestation. How would God view these?

Making Sense / Jordan Kleber
Given that we’ve been absent from Bethany since 2001, many people may need an introduction to our family. In June of that year my wife, Debbie, our two kids—daughter, Austin, who had just graduated from Garfield High, and son, Drex, who had just finished kindergarten—and I moved to the northern Portuguese city of Braga so that I could supervise construction for the Habitat for Humanity International affiliate there...

Wednesday Night Dinner / Janet Moore
Each Wednesday night Bethany opens the doors of the fellowship hall to 200 people. This dinner is exactly the kind of hospitality the Bible talks about...

Session Notes
From the Session meeting of September 11:

  • Tara Taylor opened by leading with a worship song, which we repeated several times during the evening.
  • Steve Jones gave a financial update. This is normally a deficit time of year, and this year is no exception. The deficit is about $98,000 which is significantly less than last year at the same time but still a concern. Steve also updated on a number of facility projects and repairs underway.
  • Several new or renewing elders and deacons who missed the installation/ordination time in worship in June were welcomed.
  • Time was spent in small groups, praying for one another.
Session read a chapter of Dolphus Weary’s book
Ain’t Comin’ Back, and discussed it in anticipation of his preaching at Bethany on September 16.
  • We continued our conversation on formulating a brief “Statement of Purpose” and an updated “Statement of Direction” to guide ministry efforts through Bethany.
  • Closed in prayer with Dianne Ross in her last Session meeting before her October-December sabbatical.
