What Is God Doing In The World?

perspectivesby Carol Andersen

Do you ever yearn for a chance to step back from the barrage of the daily headlines, as well as the routines of your everyday life, and take a thoughtful look at what God is up to in our world? And more to the point, consider how can you join in? If so, here is your chance to grow your perspective and grapple with those questions in community.

Starting in January, Bethany and UPC are co-sponsoring a course that has received universally enthusiastic reviews: “Perspectives on the World Christian Movement.”

Pastor Lynne Faris Blessing says, "I still have vivid memories of taking the Perspectives class 20 years ago. Perspectives helped me gain a fuller understanding of God's mission to embrace all peoples of the world with his love—as seen from Genesis to Revelation. And what was most exciting was how the course helped me discover how I can participate in God's mission."

Lois and Carl Grove took the course while they were in the process of heading overseas with Wycliffe Bible Translators. Lois writes, “I would take this Perspectives class again if I had the chance. This class forced me to grapple with many new ideas about missions, and I think it’s a challenging opportunity for anyone. One of the ideas that struck me was ‘apostolic passion: a deliberate, intentional choice to live for the worship of Jesus in the nations.’ I highly recommend the Perspectives class.”

Each week, a new instructor, ranging from Fuller Seminary professors to personnel working with mission agencies, will present material and facilitate interaction. They bring a wealth of experience and a variety of points of view.

Now for the truth in advertising: This course is not for the faint in heart. It meets for 15 weeks and each class is 3 hours long. (On Thursdays, starting January 10th, from 6:30-9:30p.m.) There is 2-3 hours of reading each week, and homework assignments. It is being held at UPC, so you have to make the trek over to the U-District. And the course costs $235 (although tuition assistance is available).

Is there anyone left reading who is crazy enough to do this? I hope so, because I am, and I’d love to have you join me. Find out more at the table in the lobby.
