Entering In/ Pastor Dan Baumgartner
I'll be honest. Occasionally, but not often it sounds really good to leave everything in the complicated sprawl we call a city behind and go become a hermit. Not a literal hermit, but someone who moves into a farmhouse with a few acres near some mountains and lives a quiet life near a small town...
Simplify/ Tara Taylor
It's hard to believe that Lent is just around the corner. Ash Wednesday (February 6th) marks the beginning of this season of reflection, quiet and self discipline leading up to Easter Sunday...
Big or Little?/ Jill Bell
One of the recurring issues I've pondered during my walk with God is whether He actually cares about the little things in my life. Those big issues - like the need for a job, or the sale of a house, or a death in the family - no problem, of course I should bring these before God...
ESL in the School System/ Susan Marshall
Since September, I have (through the AmeriCorps program) had the opportunity to serve as the Volunteer Coordinator at the Secondary Bilingual Orientation Center (SBOC), a school for newcomer refugee and immigrant students located on Queen Anne Hill...
A Time to Rest/ Dianne Ross
"Dianne, I don't want you to do anything or accomplish anything on sabbatical, but rather it should be a time for you to rest and be renewed in your relationship with Christ." .... This conversation took place in Dan's office as I was beginning to plan my sabbatical for fall 2007. It was music to my ears...

Jesus describes our community when He says, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the Harvest to send workers."...
College Age Fellowship Retreat/ Associate Pastor Todd Holdridge
One of the great joys of the last seven months has been getting to know the many college students who consider Bethany their church home. We've met weekly to share a meal, encourage each other, pray and sing together, growing closer to Christ and each other.
So you can imagine my enthusiasm at gathering with them for an entire weekend on Whidbey. Twelve of us gathered January 25-27 to pray, worship, eat, listen for God's voice, grow as a community, play board games, walk along the beach, and take a break from the routine. The highlight for many was an "Emmaus" walk with pairs of students spending an hour walking and talking together at Ebey's Landing. For others, moments of reflective Bible reading (Lectio Divina) and contemplative prayer (Prayer of Examen) were significant.
It was a true retreat, offering great community building time, time to be in the presence of Christ, and an opportunity to spend a very restful, enjoyable weekend together.
New Library Books
Bethany's library has added over 40 books this year to its collection. We encourage you to look over our book list and consider checking out some for your spiritual enrichment.
Children's Ministries
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
For many centuries Christians have “prepared” for Lent by clearing their cupboards of yeast and sweet items, prior to the first day of Lent. Thus, this year Bethany children and families (and any others who would like to come) are invited to a “Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper” on Tuesday, February 5 (this is the night before Lent starts). We will have a continuous serving line from 5:00 - 5:40 pm, and then at 5:50 pm we’ll gather in the Sanctuary for a very brief, child-friendly worship service with basic instruction on what Lent is. Resources will be available for families to use for devotions during Lent.
3rd Grade Milestone concludes this month
Our third graders, led by Christy Mansfield and Kylie Kepreos will complete their four week Bible unit, as part of our Milestone program here at Bethany this month.
On Tuesday, February 5, they will meet with Pastor Dan to learn how he studies the Bible, and how it is used in worship.
On Sunday, February 10, the students will lead a responsive reading at both morning services and will receive their Bibles from Bethany. Pray for these students to gain a great love for God’s Word!
