How's Your Vocabulary? / Pastor Dan Baumgartner
“Behold, I am doing a new thing.” That’s what the Lord said through Isaiah centuries ago. And it’s a good place to begin a short reflection on the vocabulary of faith...
Reflections on Dolphus Weary Event
Racial reconciliation has been a priority at Bethany for many years. Following the most recent event with Rev. Dolphus Weary, President & Executive Director of Mission Mississippi, we asked a few people to send us their current thoughts. Specifically, we asked them to write either a) general thoughts/reflections, b) any new insights, c) struggles/frustrations you’ve had, or d) changes you’d like to make...
Rosie Palmer Honored / by Mary Cropp
Longtime Queen Anne resident Rosie Palmer was presented with a U.S. Conference of Mayor’s End Hunger Award at an October 6 th luncheon held at the Palace Kitchen restaurant. Mayor Greg Nickels presented Palmer with the Community Volunteer Award. One of two individuals to be recognized by Seattle’s mayor, the Community Volunteer Award honors the contribution of an individual or organization in the fight against hunger.
Bringing the Church Year Home / Kimberlee Conway Ireton
It’s dinner time . The table is set: plates, forks, knives, glasses. In the center of the table is a taper candle in a glass candlestick, a gift from my parents over a decade ago. Right now, because it’s Ordinary Time, the candle is green...
Bethany Partner in Mission: Al Anderson
At a recent Evangelical Fellowship of Canada conference, the question came up: “How are we going to stem the tide of youth who are leaving the Canadian church in droves?”
Women's Bible Study / Marisa Gronholz
Blessed. Or, as it is literally translated in Psalm 1, “O how happy!” It is with this word that we began the Bethany Women’s Bible Study. And we certainly feel blessed. Today, over forty Bethany women came together to sing, laugh, pray, and discuss how the first lesson in Eugene Peterson’s study on Psalms: Prayers of the Heart had impacted them over this past week.
Bethany-McClure Update / Michelle McFarland
God works in amazing ways. The more life experience I gain, I realize how God’s timing is often quite different than our own. Case in point: Since my last article on McClure Middle School and God’s leading of some Bethany folks to extend community to the students there via a possible after-school program (specifically a “life skills” mentoring course), things have changed.

Advent Celebration for Children and Families!
Saturday, November 29, 4:30-6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall
Come prepare your hearts and homes during this “kid friendly” evening on Saturday, November 29 from 4:30-6:00 pm in Fellowship Hall. We’ll start with a simple pizza dinner, then worship together in the Sanctuary around the theme of “Waiting for Jesus’ birth”. We’ll conclude the evening by creating advent wreaths and/or “how the church tells time calendars” for our homes, to help us wait for Christmas! Please sign up on the poster by the big stairway. Cost is $3.00 per person which includes dinner and all crafts supplies. Friends are welcome!
Reminders for parents (and ushers)
We are having many new families join us on Sunday mornings. If you are ever asked “where does my child go” remember that all class locations are listed each week in the side bar of the bulletin announcement page, and they are also listed on a big poster just outside the sanctuary door near the stairway.is also a sign outside of each classroom which tells the age/grade of the children in that room. Also, children in the 2’s, 3’s and 4’s classes are reminded that even though they turn 3, 4, and 5 during this school year, they stay in their classroom for the whole year and all move up together as a class next September!

Session Notes
Our annual Session retreat was held on the October 3 rd and 4th. This year we had dinner in small groups on Friday night and then spent Saturday together at the home of David and Misty Grieger, who were gracious enough to host. The time together was spent worshiping, learning from our guest speakers Julie Anderton and Mark Cutshall, conducting some business, getting outside on a blustery Seattle day, and eating some fine food prepared by Charlie Allen and Dave Pearson.
On Tuesday, October 14, 2008 the Elders gathered in the Parlor for the monthly Session meeting. Our Session meeting was brief due to the recent retreat, but we did manage to discuss the state of the 2008 budget and continue the preplanning for the 2009 budget and receive an update from Dave Andersen and the Nominating Committee.
The 10/14 meeting was also the annual joint meeting of the Elders and Deacons. The combined meeting was filled with fellowship, worship, prayer, and discussion.
Stained Glass Reinforcement
The stained glass windows (1929) on the south side of the sanctuary will be removed, rebuilt and reinstalled during the week of November 10-14. The disruption will be relatively minor on our worship in the sanctuary, but we thank you ahead for your patience.
