Since I preached about Sabbath in October, many folks have come to me with questions, comments, and heartfelt expressions of desire and frustration about Sabbath keeping. So I wanted to share some additional resources with those of you who are interested. The following books have helped our family as we continue to learn how to keep Sabbath .
- Sabbath Keeping: Finding Freedom in the Rhythms of Rest by Lynne M. Baab. Lynne used to be an associate pastor here at Bethany. She writes clear, lucid prose, and hers is the most practical Sabbath book I’ve read.
.
- Breathe: Making Space for God in a Hectic Life by Keri Wyatt Kent. This book is about more than just Sabbath keeping; it’s about arranging our lives so that Christ is at the center. I first read it when my daughter was a few months old, and it changed my life. I especially recommend it for parents of young children.
.
- Rest: Living in Sabbath Simplicity by Keri Wyatt Kent. Keri has lived Sabbath keeping with little kids and now she’s navigating it with teenagers, and she talks about what that looks like for her family as well as others.’ Her book is especially helpful for parents.
.
- Keeping the Sabbath Wholly by Marva Dawn. This was the first book about Sabbath keeping I ever read, 12 years ago now, and it opened my eyes to the life-giving possibilities of practicing Sabbath.
All these books are available in the Bethany Library. Other books on Sabbath keeping that are available in the Library are:
- Receiving the Day: Christian Practices for Opening the Gift of Time by Dorothy C. Bass
.
- The Rest of God: Restoring Your Soul by Restoring Sabbath by Mark Buchanan
.
- Sabbath Time: Understanding and Practice for Contemporary Christians by Tilden Edwards
.
- The Sabbath: Its Meaning for Modern Man by Abraham Joshua Heschel.
Kimberlee is a published writer, happily married to Doug Ireton, & mother to Jack and Jane.
