Bethany Briefs
May 2010

pastor danSoft Hearts / Pastor Dan Baumgartner
You know me well enough after eleven years to understand that I occasionally cry, even during a sermon or worship time. I never used to shed many tears until Anne and I had children, and then something happened- my heart softened up...

Periodicals
Brad Ward
At the Bethany library, we try to provide thoughtful and intelligent resources for your Christian walk. This month I’d like to introduce our most popular section: the periodicals. From artistic expressions of spirituality to analysis and perspective on current events, the magazines and journals at the Bethany library really have something for every taste...

Just What Is Children's Church?
Dianne Ross, Director of Children's Ministries
All 2, 3 year and just turned 4 year olds know the answer: it is a place of great joy and love, and takes place in the Cherub room every Sunday morning from 10;45 -12:10. It’s a time when children experience the love of Christ through caring leaders, Bible stories, music, snacks, crafts and creative play (sometimes on the playground!)...

Renewal Weekend / Associate Pastor Todd Holdridge
We’re at it again . The Adult Christian Education team has been preparing for our next Renewal weekend, April 30-May 1, featuring Jeff Van Duzer, speaking on the topic of a theology of business...

NW Detention Center
Cal Uomoto
Earlier this month I asked if you would pray for the baptism service that would be held on the 5th. Thank you for praying. We had a very blessed evening and baptized 15 men. Most of them were from Central America, but also from China and Fiji...

An Experience of Homelessness / Richard Cote
My homeless experience started many years ago. The first few years I considered the experience careless and carefree. But as it dragged on, that experience slowly reshaped itself into something deeply scaring on my psyche...

High School Mission Trip to Pasadena
This summer 38 High School students and 12 adult volunteers from Bethany will travel to Pasadena to serve and partner with local homeless ministries and community centers...

An Update from Bobby Harding
I write to you from Fuller’s campus in Pasadena, where everyday is like living the movie Groundhog Day. I wake up to sunshine, 70 degrees, and coffee and donuts with Bill Murray in the front room. Every...single...day. Actually, one of those statements isn’t true but I won’t tell which...

Whitney Broetje
“Deep and Wide , Deep and Wide, there’s a fountain flowing deep and wide…” Do these words sound familiar? They are the words to my favorite Sunday school song growing up!...

Worship Leadership Update
One of the ways that the Bethany community cares for its staff is to provide periodic sabbatical times for renewal and rest. Bethany’s Director of Music Gary Talbert will be taking a sabbatical between the first of May and the first of August. His plans include time to reflect on the first anniversary of the death of his wife Maxine (May 10), and some extensive travel in Kenya and India. We will miss his presence, but pray for rich sabbath time. In the interim, Tara Chase will be retained on a part-time basis to provide continuity with music, musicians and worship. We’re very grateful to have such gifted folks in leadership. If you have questions, you can contact Tara, Pastor Dan or Worship Elder Lisa Hudson...

Children's Ministries

Come to the Rainforest!
All children age 3 through rising 5 th graders will enjoy a wonderful week of skits, singing, games, snacks, Parables, crafts, friends and youth mentors at this years Rainforest VBC (camp, not school!). The dates are July 19-23 and time is 9:30 am -noon. We will need over 100 adults to serve in a huge variety of ways and we invite you to pray about how God might use you in this very special week. You may help 1, 3 or all 5 days. This is a great way to get to know other adults, as well as teens and children at Bethany. If you would like to know more about ways to serve, contact Holly Royston (sulajune@yahoo.com) or Whitney Broetje (broetw@spu.edu).Registration for children will begin in late May.

Summer isn't far away...
During the summer we give our fabulous Sunday school and Godly Play leaders the summer off. But we still want to provide Sunday school and nursery for our children all summer, so all parents each take one turn serving in either their child’s classroom or in another room at 9 or 10:45.

If you already know which Sunday you would like to serve, please contact Dianne Ross (dianner@bethanypc.org) and let her know your preferred date and age group.

We also warmly welcome non parents to help out too…just let Dianne know if you’d like to helpa Sunday or two (during 9:00 am or 10:45 am).

Session Notes
On Tuesday, April 13 th the Elders and Staff gathered for the monthly Session Meeting. As always much of our time together was spent in fellowship, prayer and praise. Dave Campbell, our Elder for Wednesday Night Dinners, led us in a devotional. We talked about our annual budget and how best to communicate with the church where we stand financially. This particular session meeting we were also blessed to discuss and receive into membership several individuals that were prayed over in the 9am service on 4/18.
