At the Bethany library, we try to provide thoughtful and intelligent resources for your Christian walk. This month I’d like to introduce our most popular section: the periodicals. From artistic expressions of spirituality to analysis and perspective on current events, the magazines and journals at the Bethany library really have something for every taste.

First things first, First Things. Ok.. that’s bad. But First Things is great, and it’s one of our newest additions at the Bethany library. Founded by the late Father Richard John Neuhaus, this ecumenical journal provides analysis, in-depth articles, and even poetry from a faith-informed perspective. Don’t let the plain cover fool you, in First Things it’s the content that counts. Recent articles tackle issues like the health care debate, the “New Atheism”, and immigration policy (fortunately not all at the same time). Some of the political and social positions put forth may be controversial but the writing is consistently intelligent and thorough.

If First Things is a strong and rich double latte, our next journal is like a cup of white tea with an ethereal scent wafting up with rising steam. Weavings is a quarterly publication of spiritual writings focused on a particular theme. These meditations and essays invite the reader to take a deep breath and dwell in the presence of God. And you never know whose work you’ll read! A recent issue (Volume 25, Number 2) features a meditation by Bethany’s own Kimberlee Conway Ireton entitled “A House of Prayer”.

The most popular periodical at the Bethany library is our hardy and reliable morning brew: Christianity Today. It regularly features news of the gospel at work around the world as well as many of the challenges our Christian brothers and sisters face. It also offers reviews of Christian and secular books, movies, and music - always with an eye looking for God at work, perhaps where least expected.

Next we have that delectable mocha in the ceramic mug, decorated with an amazing display of foam art. Image, published by our friends at Seattle Pacific University, explores the mingling of faith and art. It’s regarded as one of the finest literary journals in the country and has presented works from authors and poets like Kathleen Norris, John Updike, Mary Oliver, and Luci Shaw. It also showcases contemporary visual art in various forms that point to the transcendent reality of God.

Lastly, we have Books & Culture. For a bibliophile like myself, this journal is like a huge, creamy cinnamon roll that stares from the display case - full of temptation! Published by Christianity Today, it is chock-full of book news, reviews, and interviews. As there is literally not enough time to read even a fraction of the Christian books published every year, Books & Culture can be a great ‘first stop’ when you’re looking for a suggestion. Well, a great ‘second stop’. The best first stop is the library’s blog (plug, plug).

No matter what you prefer, you’re bound to find something tasty among the periodical collection at your Bethany library. And one final note. Maintaining the library is really a perpetual process of improvement and we’re always looking for quality resources. If you have any recommendations, please email me at
