Bethany Briefs
June 2010

pastor danLed by Children / Pastor Dan Baumgartner
Chapter One. We surrounded Jacob and his family at the first service. He’s only eight months old, but I hope that somehow it is one of his earliest memories- being surrounded and prayed over by the family of Jesus...

Pam Gray Does Not Sew
Mary Cropp
She doesn’t sew. That’s the first thing to know about Pamela (Pam) Gray, who is the creator extraordinaire of this year’s Advent, Lenten and Easter banners for the church sanctuary...

The Art of Roger Feldman
Laurence Chen, Elder for Arts
Roger Feldman, a sculptor and professor of art at SPU, has something in common with Nehemiah: Both men were inspired by the idea of rebuilding in the midst of destruction. Unlike Nehemiah however, Roger didn’t take on such a task in the face of vigorous opposition...

They Are Love / Rachel Helsel
Life on Queen Anne Hill is picturesque enough to be the subject of a coffee table book, and I have a comfortable calendar that revolves around a great job, social events, and church functions. After the breaking news of the earthquakes in Haiti and China, I felt as if I had been wearing blinders that kept my focus on myself and away from remembering the cause of those in need...

Building Project / Chuck McFarland
For the last 81 years Bethany Presbyterian Church has stood on the top of Queen Anne as a place where God is discovered and shared. As you know, we’re preparing for a seismic retrofit, so this may continue...

Have Fun Helping At Rainforest Camp!
Dianne Ross, Director of Children's Ministries
All youth and adults are invited to take our kids on a RAINFOREST ADVENTURE this summer from July 19-23 each day from 9:30 am-noon. We have over 50 people signed up to help already and need a few more...

Gold Basin Camping Trip / Linda Cutshall
Shake out that tent (or borrow one) for our 12th annual Bethany Group Camping Trip, July 9-11. The place to be is Gold Basin in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest on the Stillaguamish River near Darrington. Whether a first time camper or ol’ pro you are invited to join the fun! This event is for all ages, whether single, married or with a van full of kids...

Reflections on a Life-Filled Weekend / Linda Cutshall
Women from all ages and stages of life gathered for all or part of our Women’s Retreat at Camp Berachah April 23 – 25. Berachah means “Valley of Blessing” and indeed His blessings were tangible...

Stewardship Notes
In the interest of avoiding major financial need at year end and knowing we will soon be fundraising for the seismic retrofit, Session wants to keep you informed of Bethany's finances. While deficits are common early in the year, our decrease in overall giving from a year ago is a concern. Questions? Contact Dan Wickline, Treasurer (dan.a.wickline@gmail.com), or Janette Plunkett, Stewardship elder (janplu@comcast.net).

Through April 30:

  • Year-to-date income: $390,000...[2009: $425,000]
  • Year-to-date expenses: $507,000...[2009: $521,000]
  • Deficit: ($117,000)...[2009: ($96,000)]

Children's Ministries

Summer Sunday School
During the summer we give all our fabulous “school year teachers” the summer off. Yet we want to continue to provide learning/fellowship/community building experiences for ALL our children over the summer.elders, interns and staff each coordinate one of our age groups and each dad and mom (who hasn’t taught twice a month) serves one time between June 20 and September 5. Parents have the option of leading in their own child’s class, or with another age group. Many parents and their elementary age children have enjoyed serving together in a nursery or 2 and 3 year old classroom. All parents are asked to contact Dianne (dianner@bethanypc.org) with either a few dates she can choose from, and/or dates that definitely wouldn’t work by June 7, then she and Sara McMahon will make the 8 schedules for the summer.

All Aboard
All elementary age children (going into grades 1-5) will enjoy a NARNIAN adventure with “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” this summer in Summer Sunday School. All the action will take place upstairs in room 202. Get ready for some wild adventures with Peter, Edmund, Suzy, Lucy and Eustice! Children will begin in worship with their parents as usual, then come upstairs after the Children’s Time. We will end with good fellowship and fun on the playground and lawn, where we can be picked up!

We discussed Bethany finances, the Seismic Building Project, prayed and studied scripture together and, sadly, said goodbye to the Elders that were completing their time on Session: Dave Andersen, Brian Beaumont, Larry Chen, Christy Mansfield.
