8th Grade Milestone

Organizer: Cody Duoos
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
On May 4th, Bethany PC eighth graders will have the opportunity to complete their final middle school milestone! The milestone takes place in the form of a mentor hike where students will be paired up with an adult member of the congregation and have the chance to ask them questions on the way up and then after lunch, the mentor will ask the students some questions on the way down.  This year we will be "hiking" (a better term might be 'trail walking') Cherry Creek Falls, which is considered fairly easy (300ft elevation change) so even if you don't identify as "outdoorsy" you should have no problem completing it (more or less at your own pace).  Don't let anxiety about the difficulty deter you from participating! 🙂

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this hike is to give our 8th graders the opportunity to begin to think about their own life and faith in the context of our church. Furthermore, it is designed for them to be able to build relationships with adults in our church. Our hope is that at the end of this hike, they feel known by an adult at Bethany that they had not known before. We aren’t trying to build lifetime mentorships, but simply providing opportunities for relationships to begin to be built.

WHERE & WHEN?
Students will meet at the Bethany Presbyterian Church Youth House at 11 Howe St at at 8:30am on May 4th.  We will be leaving at 9:00am.  The milestone ends on Saturday, May 4th @ 3:30pm.  We will be getting back to the church between 2:45pm & 3pm depending on travel/hike time so if you need to leave early you can, however we will be doing some debriefing during the final 30-45 mins.

COST:  $10 for food supplies

QUESTIONS TO ASK:
A list of at least 20 questions is to be created by students themselves because each person will have unique questions pertaining to his/her life.  Questions should be generated before the students arrive.

Sample Questions:
Where are you involved at Bethany? Why do you like to do that?
-What was your faith like in middle and high school? How has it changed since then?
-What is your job? What do like to do for fun? What was a great adventure you went on?
-What still confuses you about faith? What do you do when you don’t understand?
-What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
