“THE VINE” ART INSTALLATION
by the Bethany Arts Committee
In the Christian Narrative, Jesus referred to himself as “the Vine” and his disciples as the branches. He alluded to wholeness by being connected to the vine and ultimately to bearing fruit.
On the lawn adjacent to Bethany Presbyterian Church, four towers appeared at the beginning of Advent, the season that marks the coming of Jesus into the world and we celebrate his birth on Christmas. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ’s sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fasting, both from food and festivities. The culmination of the season is on Easter, when Jesus overcame death.
The metaphor of “the Vine” allows us to see change and growth. The Christian calendar takes us through a time of reflection and sacrifice that results in the ultimate celebration of Easter. Watch the “Vine” grow and change as we come toward Easter. It is not by chance that this Lenten time period coincides with the growth of Spring.
In this bleak COVID season, we can all use a little hope. It is our hope that this little bit of change brings light and hope to your life and experience.
